Captain Loxley's Little Dog & Lassie The Life Saving Collie - $10.99
Captain Loxley's Little Dog is a touching but very sad true story related to one of the naval tragedies of the First World War. It tells of the devotion of Bruce, the Airedale/Irish Terrier cross who remained faithful to his master, the Captain of the ill-fated H.M.S. Formidable, even unto death. Bruce refused to leave his master's side for the safety of a lifeboat when his master's ship went down off the Devon/Dorset Coast after being torpedoed by a German U-boat during the early hours of New Year's Day, 1915. Instead, Bruce chose to stay on duty with Captain Loxley on the forebridge to the last. Lassie was the remarkably intelligent collie from Lyme Regis, Dorset, who saved the life of one of the sailors of the H.M.S. Formidable. The afterword contains information on Bruce's grave, what happenned to the Loxley family, and some of the rescues from the Formidable. It also includes an 'in memorium' full list of the 547 crew members who died including ranks and ages where known.
