Electroceramics VI '98 - $354.56This collection of 185 papers results from contributions made at Electroceramics VI which forms part of the joint triple meeting held in Montreaux, Switzerland in August 1998. The joint meeting covered recent advances in the broad and rapidly progressing field of electroceramics, ferroelectrics and polar dielectrics. More than 550 papers were presented at the triple meeting (250 of them at Electorceramics VI '98) including a series of plenary lectures highlighting research areas of strong current and emerging interests. The meeting demonstrated the wide variety of new applications being developed, based in particular on ferroelectrics, polar dielectrics, ionic conductors and any other functional ceramics. In comparison with previous meetings, the present one showed the growing importance of surfaces, interfaces and other boundaries, e.g. domain walls. Size effects and questions related to nanotechnology were comprehensively discussed both on the academic level and for device realizations. Microdevices and their integration problems (and solutions) were at the heart of many reports. The papers reflected the extensive activities in this interdisciplinary area, while the balance between presentations from academic laboratories and from industrial R&D laboratories was a testimony to its vitality. The volume contains 185 papers selected after refereeing of the 220 papers submitted for publication. | First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans - $23.41Dogs have shared our homes for as long as we can remember, and, in return, have guarded us, helped us hunt, and herded our livestock. They have generally been our friends as well; that is what most of them are today. Canine friends give us uncritical affection, free of the ambivalence that plagues human relationships. Dogs figure prominently in literature, starting with Homer's Argus, the hound who remembered Odyssues after twenty years. Victorian novels are full of vivid canine characters. "Ms. Rogers is impressively thorough...best of all, the author knows and respects dogs." Steve Goode, Washington Times |

Politics of Public Money: Spenders, Guardians, Priority Setters, and Financial Watchdogs inside the Canadian Government (IPAC Series in Public Management and Governance) - $25.56Public money is one of the primary currencies of influence for politicians and public servants. It affects the standards by which they undertake the nation's business and it impacts on the standard of living of the nation's citizens. The Politics of Public Money examines the extent to which the Canadian federal budgetary process is shifting from one based on a bilateral relationship between departmental spenders and central guardians to one based on a more complex, multilateral relationship involving a variety of players. In this innovative study, David A. Good examines this shift in terms of a broader societal change from an 'old village,' conditioned by old norms of behaviour, to a 'new town,' which brings with it new ideas about how public money should be managed and spent. Organized into four parts, the book opens with 'The Changing Politics of Public Money,' which sets out a revised and expanded framework for analysing the politics and management of public money. Part 2, 'The Public Money Players,' looks at the motivations, interdependence, and independence of the four budget players. The third part, 'The Public Money Processes," deals with the central functions of budgeting - determining fiscal aggregates, making budget allocations, and ensuring effective financial management. Finally, 'New Prospects for Public Money,' looks ahead to the future and considers ways to strengthen the interaction among the players, and in so doing, improve the politics and management of public money. An insightful and incisive study of the changing budgetary process, The Politics of Public Money examines the promises and pitfalls of budgetary reform and sheds new light on the role insiders play in influencing government spending. | I'm Down with You, An Inspired Journey - $5.91Im Down with You will take you on an inspired journey with the people of the Down syndrome community.
