 | | | General Information | The Dachshund originated in Germany where it was bred to hunt badgers.
Bred and shown in two sizes, standard and miniature, miniatures are not a separate classification but compete in a class division for "11 pounds and under at 12 months of age and older." Weight of the standard size is usually between 16 and 32 pounds. In addition to the two sizes there are 3 forms of coat, smooth, wirehaired and longhaired. The main characteristics of this breed are the long body and the short legs. The elongated body can cause spinal problems for the Dachshund in later life.
The Dachshund will usually make a fairly good family pet and gets on well with children and other dogs if socialized as a puppy. They are playful and intelligent, but can be stubborn when it comes to training. Some sources say that the Dachshund is often a one person dog.
