 |  | | General Information | The Mastiff is recognized as the oldest British breed. It was used in the blood sports of bear-baiting, bull-baiting, dog fighting,. The Mastiff has been the basis of a number of dog breeds.
The average height of the Mastiff is 27-32 inches and usually weighs 175-200 lbs. They have a muscular build with a wide chest. The coat is short and close-lying, body colors include various shades of fawn with black on the muzzle, ears nose and around the eyes.
As a pet, this dog breed is affectionate and gentle, however it can be extremely protective of family members. They need plenty of room. As with all large dogs obedience training is a must.
