 | | | General Information | Afghan Hound originated in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they were bred to chase prey over rocky, harsh terrain These dogs were able to bring down leopards and were also used to protect the villagers. The Afghan Hound was brought to Britain in the 19th century
The male dog stand at 26 to 28 inches at the withers and the female is usually 2 inches shorter. Males weigh about 60 lbs and females weigh approximately 50 lbs. Their most distinguishing feature is the long silky coat that covers most of the body except the face and back..
Afghan hounds come in an array of colors, but the most common are black, black and tan and black-masked red. White markings and spots are frowned upon by the AKC. Puppies look very different from adults and it is difficult to ascertain how the adult will look when the dog is still a pup.
As a pet, the Afghan hound has a tendency to be an independent free thinker, and as such needs to be socialized and trained from a puppy, In general these dogs have a reputation as difficult to train. Afghans are fairly big and active so need plenty of exercise and a nice sized fenced yard. Their coats need to be regularly bathed and brushed to keep them in condition - so they are quite high maintenance.
