| Airedale Terrier |
|---|
 | | | General Information | The Airedale Terrier was developed in a region of West Yorkshire, England called Airedale. In that part of England Valleys are referred to as Dales and the river (in this case the river Aire) that flows through the valley gives it its name. One of its ancestors is the Otterhound
Male Airedale Terriers measure approximately 23 inches in height at the shoulder, and females are slightly shorter. The hair on the coat is hard, thick and wiry. The sides and upper parts of the body should are black or dark grizzle, and the head, legs up to the thighs and elbows and the chest is tan.
The Airedale Terrier is very much an all purpose dog and has served the part of retriever, hunter and herder. This dog breed is intelligent but stubborn; however they can be trained with patience and have been known to perform well in obedience competitions. They make an affectionate and loyal family pet, but do require plenty of exercise. They should also be well socialized, beginning as a puppy. The preferred method of grooming the Airedale is referred to as stripping (using a small serrated blade to pull out loose hair)
