| Akita |
|---|
 | | | General Information | The Akita`s origins can be traced back to the Akita prefecture in Japan. The original dogs which were smaller than the modern day Akita were used for hunting.
This dog breed stands at 24-28 inches at the withers. Males weight 85-120 lbs and females weigh 70-100 lbs. The Akita is double-coated, the undercoat is thick and dense and the outer coat is straight and harsh standing off the body. The hair is longest on the withers, rump and tail.
In the USA the American Akita comes in any color including white; brindle; or pinto. In Japan the Pinto color is a disqualification. American bred Akita tend to be larger the Japanese Akita and in some countries are thought of as a different breed.
The Akita makes an excellent house dog, as they only require a moderate amount of exercise. This dog breed is quite mellow and rarely barks. They are clean and odorless. Akitas usually get on well with children, but it is not recommended to leave them alone with them. With other dogs they tend to display their more dominant traits. They are pack dogs and need company - will not do well if left outside alone in a kennel.Click here for a list of Akita puppies for sale and adoption!
