| Alaskan Malamute |
|---|
 | | | General Information | The Malamute derives its name from the Mahlemuit tribe of north western Alaska, from whose dogs it is descended. It gained popularity as a sled dog during the Gold Rush period.
The Alaskan Malamute ranges in height from 23 to 25 inches at the withers and will weigh 75-85 lbs. The double coat of this breed is dense but somewhat harsher than that of the Siberian Husky. This dog is heavy boned, compact and has tremendous pulling power.
As pets, Alaskan Malamutes do not generally get on well with dogs out side their pack and other animals. They have an independent streak and can be stubborn when asked to obey commands. This breed also requires a lot of exercise. With family and other pack members they will usually show their affectionate side, however this is not the breed for the novice dog owner.
