 | | | General Information | The American Eskimo Dog is a member of the Spitz family, that is bred as as a companion dog.
The American Eskimo Breed comes in three sizes; toy (9 to 12 inches), miniature (12 to 15 inches), and standard (15 to 19 inches). Eskies have a thick undercoat and an outer coat straight long hair, with a pronounced ruff around the neck .The AKC disallows all dogs that are not white or biscuit cream.
As American Eskimo Dogs were bred as companion dogs, they usually make extremely good family pets if the owners are willing to spend plenty of time with them. Eskies are easily trained and very intelligent, although they can have an independent and stubborn streak. They are slow to mature and will still behave as puppies up to 2 years. They do shed and require weekly brushing. It is important to socialize these dogs at an early age.
