 | | | General Information | Although the name suggests that the breed originated in Australia, the Australian Shepherd dog was developed in California. From a distance the Australian Shepherd can strongly resemble a Border Collie or a large-size Sheltie.
The four most common colorings of Aussies are blue merle, red merle, black tri(-color), black bi(-color), red bi(-color) and red tri(-color).
However the Australian Shepherd can also come in solid red and solid black Dogs with tan and white along with the primary color are called tri-color. Dogs with white or copper only along with the primary color are called bi-color. Typically, Australian Shepherd males range from 20 to 23 inches and females from 18 to 21 inches. Disqualification for show dogs include white on body between withers and tail, on sides between elbows and back of hindquarters in all colors.
The Australian Shepherd is well balanced dog that is both intelligent, and active. As a pet they require plenty of exercise.
