|---|
 | | | General Information | The Basenji is an old breed that originated on the African continent. Depictions of these dogs can be found on the tombs of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. The Basenji was almost totally extinct when European explorer came across them in central Africa. at the end of the 19 century.
This dog breed measures at about 17 inches at the withers and weight 20-25 lbs. The short, fine coat comes in the following recognized colors
red/white, black/white, tricolor (red/black/white), and brindle (black stripes on a background of red)/white. They have an elegant stance and sport prickled ears, almond shaped eyes and a tightly curled tail.
As a pet, the Basenji will develop strong bonds with its owner but will be aloof to strangers. Although intelligent, like many of the hound group of dogs they are independent thinkers and can be difficult to train. It is important to begin obedience training when the puppies are still at an early age, to prevent destructive behavior in later life. This dog breed is territorial and generally does not get on well with other dogs.Click here for a list of Basenji puppies for sale and adoption!
