 | | | General Information | The Basset Hound can be traced to the friars of St. Hubert`s Abbey in medieval France. This dog breed was developed to trail game under brush in the forests (hence its short legs and stature).
Basset Hounds stand at 13-15 inches and weigh in at 45-65 lbs. Their smooth, short haired coats come in an abundance of colors, but the following occur most often: black, tan, and white, red spots on white, solid red with white feet and tails, and lemon and white. Grey and blue are also possible, but undesired by the AKC. The most distinguishing characteristics include long floppy low set ears, a long body, long tapering tail and despondent looking face.
As a pet, the Basset Hound is a loyal companion. This dog breed is friendly and usually gets on well with children and strangers alike. They are social dogs by nature and are often kept as pairs so that if the owner is away, they can keep company with one another. The Basset hound is not terribly active, but does require regular walking. They can be stubborn and have a reputation of been difficult to train.Click here for a list of Basset Hound puppies for sale and adoption!
