 |  | | General Information | The breed originated in Switserland as an all purpose work dog - herding livestock, pulling carts and watching the farm.
The Bernese Mountain dog stands at 23-27.5 inches and weighs 80-130 lbs. Females are usually a little smaller than the males.
The coat has a bright sheen and is thick, moderately long and slightly wavy or straight. Bernese Mountain Dogs are always tri-colored. The base color is black and the markings are white and rust.
The Bernese Mountain Dog has an extremely good temperament and is loyal, faithful, affectionate and intelligent. This dog breed does not require excessive grooming unless it is shedding its coat and a brushing once every 2 weeks can be adequate.
