 |  | | General Information | The Cairn Terrier, is one of many terriers that originated in the Western Scottish Islands, where they were bred to hunt fox, otter and badgers.
In America, the Cairn terrier should ideally stand about 10 inches at the withers and weigh 14 lbs. However standards do vary between kennel clubs, and in reality there is quite a variation in size and weight. The Cairn Terrier has a harsh, weather-resistant outer coat that can vary in color, however the AKC will disqualify white. Dark ears, muzzle and tail tip are desirable.
In general the Cairn terrier makes an excellent family dog, although they are known to be stubborn and require patience training. If socialized properly, they get on well with children. They are small enough to kept in an apartment, but are high energy dogs and need to be exercised regularly. Although small, they rarely make good lap dogs because of their high energy levels.
