| Chesapeake Bay Retriever |
|---|
 | | | General Information | The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia and Maryland. These dogs are extremely impervious to inclement weather and allowed their owners to hunt game throughout the cold winters. In addition to being a great retriever of water fowl, this dog was also employed as a guard dog to protect the hunters spoils.
Males measure 23 to 26 inches; and females measure 21 to 24 inches. Their colorings are usually a solid shade of brown, sedge or deadgrass, and the coat is short and thick. The water-resistant coat of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever works in much the same way as a ducks feathers in protecting it from the cold water.
As a pet, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever makes a wonderful companion, and eagerly pleases the owner. These dogs do require training, and although intelligent have a reputation for stubbornness. They have a reputation for dominance over other dogs, and for that reason it is not suggested that a pet owner have more than one.Click here for a list of Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppies for sale and adoption!
