 |  | | General Information | The breed originated in 16th century England and earned its name because it was used in bullbaiting (a gambling sport that set the Bulldog against a Bull). Bullbaiting was outlawed in the early-mid 19th century.
The dog is well known for its stocky appearance and even though it only grows to 12-14 inches can weigh 50 lbs.
The coat of the English Bulldog is finely textured, straight, short and flat. Its glossy coat can be any of the following colors (1) red brindle, (2) all other brindles, (3) solid white, (4) solid red, fawn or fallow, (5) piebald.
As pets, Bulldogs are usually affectionate, playful and friendly. They have a reputation for been stubborn, but generally get on well with children and other animals.
