 | | | General Information | The Sheltie or Shetland SheepDog originates from the Shetland Islands of Scotland. In this remote area of the world, with few predators and food scarcity, the Shetland Sheepdog was bred to be small yet hardy. Heights for both male and female show dogs range from 13 to 16 inches to the shoulder, although some may grow a little larger. They resemble both the Collie and/or Border Collie in most attributes, and are sometimes referred to as miniature collies.
Shelties come in both short haired and long haired varieties, and varied colorings and markings. Sable, black and blue merle, with varying amounts of white and tan. Surprisingly they are not that difficult to groom, with the female sheltie molting more than the male.
These dogs are intelligent (easy to train), alert and extremely affectionate. However, they do tend to be very active and excitable. Some Shelties can show timidity toward strangers. They make excellent watchdogs often barking when the door bell rings, but possess neither the size nor ferocity to be an effective guard dog. As with all herding dogs early socialization is important, Sheltie pups should be exposed to other people and dogs at an early age.
