American Pit Bull Terrier Breed Basics

APBTs have seen success as companion dogs, and police dogs. Unfortunately , Pit Bull Terriers have also been used in illegal dog fighting operations - which has somewhat tainted their character in the eyes of some. Despite some of these negative impressions - most owners will tell you that a well-bred American Pit Bull Terrier is a faithful, good-natured companion.

The Pit Bull Terrier is a UKC recognized breed that originated in the UK by cross breeding older lines of English Terrier and Bulldogs. Once in the new world they were further developed into what is known as the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are very closely related to the American Staffordshire Terrier (AKC) which came from the same lineage.

The breed is regarded as an strong and confident dog always willing to please its owner. They are usually amiable toward people - even strangers. The UKC specifies that aggressiveness is an undesired trait in this breed.

The coat is short glossy and smooth (never wavy or curly), and moderately soft. APBTs come in a large variety of solid and mottled colors. Merle is th only color that is specified as a disqualification by the UKC.
