Great Pyrenees Breed Basics

The Great Pyrenees, also know as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a large dog that was primarily bred to guard livestock. Although this is a large and formidable breed, it is renowned for it its gentle nature and makes a great family pet in the right home for the right owner.

There are written references to this breed as early as 1407. They were used as Shepherd dogs by the people inhabiting he Basque region (an area encompassing southern France and northern Spain). During the 19th century, thriving mountain market town dealing in dogs led to their distribution throughout France. It's magnificent appearance, poise and even temperament gave rise to its popularity as a family pet.

Owners of the Great Pyrenees describe them as been confident, gentle and affectionate They are said to be to be composed, patient and loyal. It is a strong willed, independent and fearless. They can be quite reserved.

This breed sports a double coat to protect it from the weather. The thick outer coat is long and flat (it may be slightly wavy) and consists of coarse hair. The undercoat consists of a fine thick woolly layer. The color is white and can have varying shades of gray, red, or tan around the face They weigh between 85 and 140 pounds
