Introduction

Morkies are a designer mix resulting from the cross of the Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier. They are said to may excellent companion dogs, and their small size makes them an excellent lap dog for its owner. Their appearance can be anywhere between that of a Maltese and a Yorkie.

History

This cross-breed was said to have originated somewhere in the USA during the nineties. Once considered a novelty these dogs have now gained a lot of popularity with dog owners, and are not as rare as they once were.

Temperament

Morkies are active and playful. They form strong attachments to owners as well as desire a lot of attention from their owners. Morkies are a social dog and love to be played with. Morkies are excitable, energetic, confident, and loyal. They tend to be people focused dogs.

Coat

The hair is almost always glossy, fine, straight, and silky and usually their is no under coat. Colors usually vary from a pale ivory to the grey, black, and tan coat see in a purebred Yorkshire Terrier.

Do Morkies do well in Apartments?

This small dog is almost perfect for apartment dwellers because of its small size and minimum exercise needs. Some Morkies will bark spontaneously at unknown noises and stimuli, so you may have a problem if you have thin walls and noisy neighbors.

Barking

Left alone for extended periods, at such times can be prone to excessive barking. As they tend to bark at strangers, they can make compact little watch dogs.

Do Morkies Get Along With Children & Other Pets?

Morkies seem to have very few problems with cats, especially if they are brought up alongside them, but can testy with small children and may nip them if not socialized properly.

Exercising a Morkie

They are energetic little dogs, but a 30 minute brisk walk on a daily basis is sufficient to keep this breed fit and healthy. If you feel your Morkies could do with additional exercise a small back yard is all he needs.

How to Groom a Morkie

Morkies must be brushed everyday to prevent knotting and matting. Morkies must be groomed regularly. Haircuts are recommended every 6-10 weeks depending on how you prefer the dog to be groomed. It is also important to pay particular attention in keeping the areas around your Morkies eyes clean because debris can buildup in this area.

Morkie and Shedding

Although Morkies will shed hair, it just tends to grow and grow, and unlike most dogs this one will need regular haircuts to keep the coat from been tangled and matted.

Morkie Health Problems?

Common problems found in Morkies are Chiari malformation Syringomyelia. Primary Lens Luxation, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Eye infections, Dental issues, Tracheal collapse. However reports from owners seem to indicate that these problems are less prevalent than in the Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese purebreds.

Are Morkies Intelligent?

Morkies are above average intelligence and can be taught to obey commands fairly quickly.
