Poodle Standard Breed Basics

The Poodle is the second most intelligent breed. Only the Border Collie is brighter. The Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three size varieties, and formed the breeding stock for the miniature ant toy varieties. Poodles are great swimmers, and are sometimes used as retriever by duck hunters.

The poodle originated in Germany as was initially know as the 'Pudelhund' . It is believed that it the breed we know now was standardized in France where it was mixed with the French Barbet and Hungarian Water Dog. It was commonly used as a water retriever for hunting game fowl until it was popularized by the aristocracy.

The Purebred Poodle owner regards the breed as intelligent, energetic, and very sociable. Initially, they tend to be reserved with strangers, but once they get to know someone they soon warm up to them. They require both physical and intellectual activities.

The Poodle sports a a single layered moisture-resistant, curly coat that protects it in water and damp conditions. They come in a variety of colors: apricot, cream, brown, grey, blue, black and white. Only solid colors are recognized by the AKC.

They weigh between 45 and 70 pounds
