Goldendoodle Breed Basics

The Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever Poodle mix. It's size can vary greatly depending upon size Poodle that the Golden retriever was mated with. Most of our stats refer to a standard mix. Since the mid 2000s, Goldendoodles have found success as guide dogs, therapy dogs, diabetic dogs, search dogs and search/rescue dogs. They have become popular family pets as they shed less than the Retriever and have a patient affectionate nature.

This breed was originally developed as an assistance dog for the blind with allergies in the 1990s. The idea was to take the Golden Retriever (already in use as a guide dog) and cross breed it with a Standard Poodle (a non shedding breed) to obtain those to characteristics in a single dog.

Goldendoodles have a similar temperament to that of a Golden Retriever, been both patient and affectionate towards their owner. They are also very trusting, so they make poor choice for watch or guard dogs.

The coat can take three forms. A straight coat like the Golden Retrievers, a wavy coat that is somewhere between that of a poodle and a retriever, and curly. The variety of colors include white, cream, apricot, gold, red, and sometimes gray and black (also called phantom). They weigh between 35 and 55 pounds
